The development of a new chip by hearing aid manufacturers means the introduction of a new range of hearing aids. Widex Clear instruments feature their C-ISP platform. Apart from new sound processing features, the biggest talking point about this range was the introduction of wireless connectivity.
Clear440 products feature ‘WidexLink,’ a digital radio frequency transmission technology. WidexLink enables transmission of sound from assistive listening devices (such as ‘DEX’ devices) to hearing aids, as well as the exchange of data between hearing aids. There are specific DEX devices for connection between a Widex Clear hearing aid and the user’s TV (TV-DEX), or mobile (M-DEX). The radio transmission technology is also used for the transmission of data between the remote control (RC-DEX) and hearing aid. WidexLink also enables extremely fast communication between hearing aids, i.e. when the user is wearing a hearing aid on each ear. Widex refer to this as InterEar, it helps to optimise various sound processing features as well as offering practical applications of automatically changing the programme on, for example the right ear, when the user changes the left ear.
Although the wireless connectivity is appealing to gadget fans, the underlying sound processing is more important when it comes to compensating for hearing loss. The C-ISP chip offers a host of new features when compared to the Widex Mind predecessor. Central to the improvements is the further enhancement of the TruSound compression system, specifically the addition of the TruSound Softener. The TruSound Softener works to minimise the impact of sudden sounds on listening comfort. In the Clear440 the TruSound compression system works in 15 channels, which are carefully selected to try to mimic the way in which the human ear processes different frequencies.
The Clear440 range is available in a number of different product styles. There are two receiver-in-the-ear options, three behind-the-ear designs and 3 custom-made in-the-ears.
