The Siemens Pure is available as a RIC (receiver in the canal) product format at four different technology levels. The top end 701, second tier 501, third tier 301 and entry level 101. As one would expect from a reputable hearing aid manufacturer all are good quality products but one must decide which is the correct level of technology and subsequent hearing benefit to match your loss and the sound situations where you are experiencing the most difficulty. The second technology tier is often where there is a good match of close to optimum performance with a reduction in price over the premium line, giving value for money without significant compromise. To asses this we must look at the differential between the top end Pure 701 and the Pure 501. The Pure 501 operates with a 12 channel processor and this is quite a small drop from the 16 used within the 701. The more channels, the better the fit to a specific shape of loss and in theory the more comfortable the sound delivery. Looking down the scale the Pure 301 is an 8 channel system so a further four different. Have a discussion with your hearing aid professional to really decide if this will significantly affect your circumstances. Within the "Natural Sound" category the number of channels is the only differential between the 701 and the 501 but in the "Sound Comfort" there is an algorithm called SpeechFocus which is only available in the 701. This would appear to be a factor that on its own would dictate the selection of the premium technology but all these algorithms work in combination and what is more interesting to the potential Pure 501 buyer is that the directionality system which is key to speech understanding in noise is the same for both the 701 and 501. Both have Automatic multichannel-adaptive directionality and although the 701 will operate across 16 rather than 12 channels this key element seems to swing the decision in the Pure 501’s favour. There are also subtle downgrades of the Speech and Noise Management as well as the SoundSmoothing but overall this Pure 501 sits quite close to the premium level so our judgement would be to investigate this product thoroughly before deciding to pay the extra for the 701. In summary, a very good quality product from a very good quality manufacturer, so one can be reassured that the Pure 501 will deliver a considerable benefit to a suitable wearer.
