Launched in 2012 the Siemens Eclipse XCEL comes in a number of different formats of which the 701 is the one that would satisfy most potential hearing aid wearers requirements of sound delivery combined with invisibility. The problem that not only Siemens but all hearing aid manufacturers face is that what the client wants is not always either the best for them or the easiest to manufacture. Placing an electronic device so deep into the ear canal that it is effectively invisible is not easy. Doing so without completely blocking the canal and eliminating all residual hearing is another problem. So can the Eclipse XCEL 701 overcome these perennial issues?

Siemens have tackled the insertion and comfort issue by making the product with a custom built hard shell to exactly fit the ear canal but have then topped the product with a soft dome. This is designed to be positioned very close to the ear drum and therefore is required to deliver less amplification than those products that sit further out in the ear or are behind the ear systems. In being so close to the ear drum it has an additional benefit of minimising the effect of your ear canal being blocked – known as occlusion, this can be very detrimental and can often cause a hearing device to be rejected as the first time wearer cannot live with the "head in a barrel" feeling and the change to the perception of their own voice.

The EXCEL 701 is classified as suitable for mild to moderate losses and is clearly aimed at an audience which is still adamant that their hearing aid cannot be seen. Based upon its invisibility, Siemens have dispensed with too many colour options but the product comes with a choice of dark brown, tan or pearl white shell colour with a red dome for the right-hand side and a blue dome for the left-hand side.

As one would expect from a top of the range product Siemens has loaded the EXCEL 701 with technology driven by a 16 channel sound processing. They have coined the phrase Soundability which they hope will deliver the user "a perfect combination of sound quality and effective audibility".

In summary, if "small" and "invisible" are the buzzwords that are of paramount importance for you in selecting which hearing aid you are prepared to wear then the Siemens EXCEL 701 may well be the right product for you.
