Siemens has four products that are ostensibly very similar. They are all designed to be fitted deep into your ear canal and all intended to be all but invisible. In order to be positioned so far down a canal the build and size has to be carefully considered and this is where the first differentiation appears. The iMini range is constructed along more classic hearing aid manufacturing lines, being a hard case moulded to fit the ear canal at the deepest point of the impression that has been taken. The Eclipse has a specially constructed shell that fits with a soft dome on the end that can be part of the impression taken process and therefore in theory be fitted deeper, with the consequent benefits in both sound and invisibility. Like the iMini the Eclipse comes in two technology levels, the 701 and the 301. The most obvious difference between the two levels is the number of sound processing channels. The 701 has 16 whereas the 301 has been reduced to just 8. The possible issue here is that with fewer channels the hearing aid professional cannot match the device’s performance as closely to your specific hearing loss. The key feature of products of this nature is clearly their size and positioning deep in the canal. The limitation is that with a restriction on size there is a limit to the technology and also a limit to access – in other words a correctly fitted Eclipse would not have a push button to change programmes as this could not easily be reached. This also has an implication for the technology within the hearing aid. Deeply fitted devices tend to provide amplification in a relative unsophisticated manner and this is the case for the Eclipse EXCEL 301. If all you are after is help with amplification and are not prepared to have a visible device then we would recommend that you discuss this option with the hearing aid professional but while you are there take the time to understand what its more expensive sister product may do better.
