The Ignite 20 hearing aid range comes from the US manufacturer Starkey, one of the large players within the industry. Starkey are the only American business amongst the major producers and come with a solid reputation especially for very small ITE (in the ear) devices.
The Ignite 20 is an entry level portfolio with a more fully-featured sister product range in the Ignite 30. At its core is a four channel processing chip platform that will provide a degree of scope for the hearing aid audiologist to fine the aid to match your specific hearing loss. In theory, the more channels there are, the better the match to the amplification and frequencies that you need. It can also have up to four manually selected programmes that can be suited to your listening environments providing flexibility across the range.
The Ignite is offered in a number of different product formats, so there should be a size and shape to suit you. There are four ITE (in the ear) options ranging in size, battery life and functionality – very simply the larger the product, the longer the battery life and the more functionality can be incorporated. There are also two BTE (behind the ear) products as well as the Starkey Xino format. The Xino, pronounced Zeeno, is classified as an IIC (invisible in the canal) which as its name suggest is a very small hearing aid that sits quite a long way down the ear canal. This has two advantages. The first is that it is more discrete and cosmetically appealing and the second is that being so close to the ear drum, the product does not need to deliver such a high level of amplification when compared to those devices that sit in the outer canal or bowl of the ear.
Even though it is clearly positioned as an entry level product, the Starkey Ignite 20 still has a directional microphone function on some products. The key advantage of this type of system is that it is proven to help with the comprehension of speech in noise by focusing the amplification of the hearing aid primarily in front of the user which is beneficial as one tends to face those who you are talking to. As well as the directional mics, the Ignite 20 has feedback cancellation and a noise reduction feature providing a more comfortable listening experience.
For first time users or those with limited requirements for amplification in difficult situations the Ignite 20 could well be a good value for money solution. Discuss your needs with the hearing aid audiologist and if you discover that you need something more, there is always the Ignite 30 to consider.
In summary: Ignite 20, a hearing aid system from Starkey, offers great value for money without compromising on performance. Available in a variety of styles, these hearing aids provide great sound quality and comfort.
