The Naida range from Phonak is available in four different technology bands and is a product range of BTE (behind the ear) hearing aids designed specifically for those with a significant hearing loss. The S1 is the entry level technology band and can be offered as a SP (Super Power) product or a UP (Ultra Power) product.

Although both the SP and UP are larger than many BTE hearing aids they are still good looking hearing aids with a modern curve design that can be ordered in a bewildering array of colours from the classic beige through to translucent bright colours to zebra effect stripes and even ones with a "cracked" effect design. The choice is definitely there for all tastes from sedated classics to in your face Wow!

The technology inside the Naida S1 can best be described as good quality no frills sound processing. Both the SP and UP have the same algorithm suite, although the UP will deliver more power. Phonak list their key features and benefits as WhistleBlock to control feedback, NoiseBlock to minimise background noise, Acoustically Optimized Venting (AOV) which enables minimal occlusion for a power aid and Water Resistance.

Clearly targeted at the higher degrees of hearing loss, the SP model is aimed at moderately severe to profound loss, while the UP with its greater amplification is for those with profound loss.

Phonak are a very high quality mainstream manufacturer but with a legacy of catering for niche demands such as paediatric and educational systems. It is to their credit that they continue to invest in and produce systems such as the Naida which will never have the mass market appeal of a hearing aid for mild to moderate loss but is vital for those for whom it is designed.

In summary, a great value product for those who require a high degree of amplification.
