One of the fundamental differences between the Audeo S3 and its cheaper Audeo S1 cousin is the addition of two incremental formats – the Phonak Audeo Mini and Phonak Audeo Yes. However as the Audeo Smart is available in both S1 and S3 formats we have to focus on why this may be right for you and justify the additional cost over the entry level price. So what do you get for an additional £200 over the S1 price? 6 channel technology. As with all other Phonak Audeo’s the S3 Smart uses the SPICE platform which is fast, avoiding delays and allowing for a wide range of features to be processed in real time. The additional two channels over the entry level S1 will allow for greater programming flexibility and should provide a better match to your specific hearing loss. The S3 incorporates a feature Phonak call Soundrelax which detects any sudden loud noise and rapidly reduces the volume through the hearing aid to minimise the shock impact. Very comforting if loud noises make you jump or even more so if you have found them painful while using other hearing aids. Environmental recognition used to be the preserve of the higher echelons of hearing aid technology but the Audeo S3 offers this at a very attractive price point. It is limited to two programmes and Phonak call it Soundflow but if you move between different sound environments and you want your hearing aid to automatically adapt then this alone justifies the difference over the S1. In common with the Audeo S1 the S3 has the directionality, feedback suppression, noise cancellation and high frequency focus – all very useful features to improve sound quality and overall listening experience.
