The Siemens Life 501 is a very small BTE (behind the ear product) which uses the Siemens Life tubing system. When it was introduced, thin tubes revolutionised hearing aids as they enabled sound to be delivered to the ear canal without the quite cumbersome thicker tubing that was invariably used in conjunction with a quite occluding ear mold. An occluding ear mold would cause the ear to be blocked thereby limiting the user’s residual hearing as well as being quite uncomfortable. Thin tubing was then superseded by RIC (receiver in the canal) technology so products like Siemens Life are not as popular as they used to be. Having said that this is a well proven and cosmetic solution so may well be a good option to explore further.
Let’s take a look at the processing within the Siemens Life 501. Being a second tier product it will be well featured but maybe lacking some of the most advanced processing of the top of the range 701. Siemens have a categorisation which, although somewhat simplistic, gives a good indication of how they view the difference between their various technology levels by classifying the situations in which they would be most useful to the wearer. The higher the technology, the more environmental situations Siemens believe would be suitable. There are only two out of twelve missing from the 501 versus the 701; these are "Mall" and "Crowds". Both these are remarkably similar environments so in reality it is being suggested that only in the most difficult listening environment of a high level of background speech babble would the 701 really deliver over the 501.
The reason behind the quite minimal classification differentiation is that the 501 contains a remarkable number of sound processing algorithms which can provide high-quality sound amplification in a wide variety of listening situations. Within "Natural Sound" there is SoundBrilliance, e2e wireless technology, SoundBalance and TruEar – all of which are proprietary Siemens’ systems that are driven through a 12 band sound processor. In this category, the difference is that the 701 has a 16 band processor but both are extremely advanced systems.
Within "Sound Comfort" the Siemens Life 501 does have a comprehensive suite of algorithms but lacks the SpeechFocus of the 701 and it is this advanced directionality system that will give the 701 the edge in crowded, noisy environments.
In summary, the Siemens Life 501 is a very high-quality hearing system that will serve you well in almost all situations. It may not quite have the edge in the noise of a crowd but other than that we would have no problem in recommending you explore this product further.
